Linkstation LS220DE

This device is a little strange and funky to set up, and its native software has a pretty cheesy way of sharing over the Internet, but it's nice and compact and will work OK as a basic file server. Upgraded (maxed out) to two internal 4TB drives in RAID 0; can back up to attached USB drive.

# Making it more useful If I'm going to use it for active sharing, one thing that will make it much more useful is if I can make it a bit more Linux-like. The ability to SSH into it, and either natively share via WebDAV, or maybe have a different box re-share its contents over WebDAV. * ACP Commander could enable SSH access? (Will it work on this model?) Looks like it, some discussion here . And another set of instructions on enabling ssh. And some detailed hackery archive of forum * OpenLinkstation appears to be a free firmware upgrade, could maybe unlock additional features. * Seems I could maybe just install Debian on it (!) Instructions for Debian

Or, a more straightforward use if the above proves problematic: - Turn into a dedicated backup drive once I have a better file server

# Drawbacks

• Permissions are pretty funky to set up. (I got a virus uploaded, as far as I can tell I lucked out that nothing worse was done and I was able to delete it, but it resulted in part due to really confusing permissions settings.)

• Doesn't seem to keep any logs (?!) So, it's hard to even know where that virus came from (but I'm pretty sure I know).

• No SSH login (without jumping through hoops).

• No NFS sharing

• No SFTP

• No WebDAV

• Has a built-in BitTorrent client, which is cool, but it seems to lack some important preferences settings…is it an early version of the software?

• Backup seems dumb and cheesy.

• Formats external USB in a way that can't (?) be accessed from other computers.

• No good way to restore from backup to USB.
